Let Cost of one meal be x.
Hence, C.P. of 240 meals = 240 x.
Since contractor gains 12.5 % profit therefore
total selling price = 240x + 240*12.5/100 x
= 270x.
Now 30 guest were absent.
Therefore C.P will remain same = 240x
And new S.P for 210 guest = (270/240 ) *
210 x
In this case he incurrs a loss of Rs 100.
240x - (9/8) x * 210 = 100
x=80/3.
So, cost of one meal is Rs. 80/3.

let cost be x and charge for each meal be y
210y = x-100
240y = 1.125x
ANS:- y=30

Let the cost for each meal be x. The total cost for the contractor to prepare the meals is 240 x. The profit per meal is 0.125 x, so he is going to sell each meal at 240*x + 0.125*240*x.
If all the guests showed up, the contractor would expect to get 240 * x + 240 * x * 0.125 in total.
Because of 30 guests less showing up, the contractor got 210 * x + 0.125*x*210, which in total is 100 rs less than what he payed for preparing the meals. So,
210*x + 0.125*x*210 = 240*x - 100, which results in x= 26.67 rs. (or 80/3)

If x is the cost of 1 meal, then
240x*100/112.5 = 210x+100
solving it, we get
x= Rs 30.
