answer is 4.
suppose the surface area of the cube that is painted red is
+ + + +
+ * * +
+ * * +
+ + + +
the "+" are those cubes which are two side painted and the * are the cubes which are only one side painted .look at the diagram and relate with the surface of a cube that is painted by red colour and you can understand it.
