here y is given just for confusion ;but agar z strips ek k upar ek rakh di jayengi to aisa krne se width change nhi hogi infact it will lead to some height which is 'zx'.because base to same rahega 'y'length aur 'x' width ka,jo bhi strips pile up hongi wo ek height gain kar lengi..........hence final width will be ''x'' for sure..

totally there are z strips and each strip have x cm width. so we have z*x width.
y is the base length and when one strip is placed above the other there is no change in the base length. width is nothing but height.

neither length increases nor Width increases only hight increases .

length=y;
width=x;
height=zh(if height of one strip is h)

they aske arrangement width not the width of x...so answer is
(z-1)(y-x)+x
