Now, the statement clearly shows that it is an inverse variation.
0.5 expressed as a fraction is 50/100 = 1/2
0.875 expressed as fraction is 875/1000 = 7/8
let x be the maximum marks for science.
weightage is inversely proportional to maximum marks , which is logically interpreted as :
maximum marks proportional to 1/weightage
so 1/0.5 is proportional to 100
similarly 1/0/875 is proportional to x (we have to calculate x)
1/1/2 : 100 and 1/7/8 : x
so we get 2 : 100 :: 8/7 : x
Product of means = product of extremes
2x = 1000 * (8/7)
so you get x as 400/7 which is equal to 57 1/7 (mixed fraction)
You can also neglect 1/7 and say 57 as the answer (depends upon the options given)
so the maximum marks for science is 57

Just a few typing errors in the solution : it is 1/0.875 and not 1/0/875
2x = 100*(8/7) and not 1000*(8/7) .. Sorry for the errors...
