Three postboxes
Five Letters

The first letter can go into any of the three postboxes, so 3 ways
The second letter can go into any of the three postboxes again, so 3 ways again
Similarly the third, fourth and the fifth letters can go into any of the three boxes, in 3 ways each.

So answer = 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 3 power 5
