5 is the answer.
Let T number of toffees.
T/87= a+86
T/15=b+14
Using hit and trial t will come out as 869.
Therefore, 869/16=5 toffees remaining.

Let T be total number of toffees.
T mod 87=86. So T=87(k1)-1----(1)
T mod 15=14. So T=15(k2)-1----(2)
Here k1,k2 are constants.
Lcm of 87k1,15k2=435k
So total should be 435k-1 and should be odd.
For k=1=>T=434( It is not odd)
For k=2=>T=869 (Yes,It is Odd).
So Total=869.
So 869 mod 16= 5

the ans is 5
the totaal number of toffees is 869 because when there 87 people(72+15) then the remainder is 86
when there 15 tchrs the remainder is 14
so the answer will be the lcm of (87 and 15 )-1
but this would be an even number
so we multiply the lcm of 87 and 15 by 2
and then subtract one to get the total number of toffees

Let total number of toffees are T
total teacher + student = 72 + 15 = 87
distributing among 87 persons , 86 left
so,
T/87 = a + 86
similarly in the 2nd case,
T/15 = b + 14
in both the cases
left toffies are 1 less than the divided person
so if he distribute the toffies among 16 person(teacher + himself)
then 15 toffies will be remain.

Answer is 15. When there were 87 people(72 student and 15 teachers) then the number of toffees remaining were 86. Similarly, when there were 15 teacher, the number of toffees remaining after being distributed were 14. Thus, when there are 16 people, the number of yoffees remaining would be 15.
