Javagal, who decided to go to weekened trip should not exceed 8 hours driving in a day. The average speed of forward journey is 40 miles/hr.Due to traffic on sundays, the return journey’s average speed is 30 m/h. How far he can select a picnic spot?

Solution

avg speed for whole trip=2*40*30/30+40=34.28
total distance =34.28*8=274.24miles
so distance of picnic spot = 274.24/2 = 137.12

let the distance of the picnic spot from his house be x and the total distance is zx
total time = 8 hours
average speed of forward journey is 40 miles/hr
this means time taken for forward journey = x/40
similarly return journey’s average speed is 30 m/h
the time taken for return journey = x/30
hence total time taken = x/30 +x/40
x/30 +x/40 =8
solving we have x = 137.6miles
