use the simple formula
dividend =divisor*quotient +rem
let the number be n,
n=357*q1+5
similarly for
n=17*q2 + R {R is the remainder ,which is to be founded }
on equating we get
17*q2 + R = 357*q1 +5
therefore R = 17*21*q1 +5 -17 *q2
= 17(21*q1 -q2) +5
so Remainder = 5

the number which when divided by 357 and gives remainder 5 will be like (357xX)+5 or (21x17xX)+5....this number when divided by 17 will also generate remainder equal to 5...bcoz the first part of given numbr i,e. (21x17xX) is divisible by 17...

let the no. is x
so, 357k+5=n
therefore, (17*18)k+17-12=n
so ans will be 12.

IF THE NUMBER GIVES A REMAINDER 5,THEN THE NUMBER CAN BE 357+5=362,
NOW,362/17 WE WILL GET REMAINDER 5.
SO ANS:5

If a num gives a rem of 5 when divided by 357 then it is of form 357 * X + 5. Now when the num is divided by 17 then (357 * X + 5)/17. 357 will get divided by 17. So the remainder will be 0+5=5.
