let age of paul=x
age of peter =y
x=2(y-x)
y+x=35
2y=3x
2(35-x)=3x
70=5x
x=14
y=35-14=21
paul=14
peter=21

for this type of problems just follow two conditions.......
7*x/4=(given age)..... here x gives elder persons age...........
7*y/3=(given age)..... here x gives younger persons age...........

Supposing Peter’s age is e and Paul’s age is a

We have a + e = 35………………….. (1)

Now when Peter was Paul’s age which means (e - a) years ago

Peter would have been e - (e - a) = a which is Paul’s age now

Paul would have been a - (e - a) = 2a - e
We have been given that Peter’s age is twice what Pauls was,

so e = 2(2a - e) = 4a - 2e which gives 3e = 4a………………….. (2)

For ease of use if a + e = 35; then 3a + 3e = 105 = 3a + 4a from (2) above

Thus 7a = 105

a = 15; e = 20

So Peter is 20 years and Paul is 15 years. The sum is 35 years and when Peter was 15 years Paul would have been 10 years which doubled gives Peter’s age of 20 years now.

paul age=2*(peter age -(paul age-peter age))
=2*(2peter age -paul age)
3paul age=4peter age; paul age+peter age=35
paul age+ 3/4paul age=35

The answer is 21 years old (age of Peter).

Equation:

let x = present age of Peter
y = present age of Paul

When Peter has the same age as Paul (y yrs. old), age of
Paul is y/2 yrs. old. Since the differences of there ages
are equal for the 2 events, we have the equation...

x - y = y - y/2
y = (2/3)x

Substituting the equation of y to the equation x + y = 35,
will give us....

x + (2/3)x = 35

therefore, x = 21 (age of Peter)
