Let C1 be the cost price of the first article and C2 be the cost price of the second article.
Let the first article be sold at a profit of 22%, while the second one be sold at a loss of 8%.

We know, C1 + C2 = 600.
The first article was sold at a profit of 22%. Therefore, the selling price of the first article = C1 + (22/100)C1 = 1.22C1
The second article was sold at a loss of 8%. Therefore, the selling price of the second article = C2 - (8/100)C2 = 0.92C2.

The total selling price of the first and second article = 1.22C1 + 0.92C2.

As the merchant did not make any profit or loss in the entire transaction, his combined selling price of article 1 and 2 is the same as the cost price of article 1 and 2.

Therefore, 1.22C1 + 0.92C2 = C1+C2 = 600
As C1 + C2 = 600, C2 = 600 - C1. Substituting this in 1.22C1 + 0.92C2 = 600, we get
1.22C1 + 0.92(600 - C1) = 600
or 1.22C1 - 0.92C1 = 600 - 0.92*600
or 0.3C1 = 0.08*600 = 48
or C1 = 48/(0.3) = 160.
If C1 = 160, then C2 = 600 - 160 = 440.
The item that is sold at loss is article 2. The selling price of article 2 = 0.92*C2 = 0.92*440 = 404.80.

x+y=600---1st equation
x*(100+22)/100+y*(100-8)/100=600----second equation...

now solve the x and y...
and at the end ...440*92/100=404.8

answer is B ie 440

becoz..
given that after sold two articles net effect is no profit no loss condition
so
let selling price of the article that he sold at a loss is x
then
0.92x+1.22(600-x)=600
0.92-1.22x+732=600
-0.3x=-132
x=132/0.3

x=440

hence Rs 440

CP(total)= 600
two articles are there.
let cost price of them CP1=x, CP2=y
so x+y=600 ---------- (1)

SP= (100+gain%)CP/100
SP= (100-loss%)CP/100

so SP1= (100+22)x/100= 122x/100
SP2= (100-08)y/100= 92y/100

since no profit, no loss so CP(total)=SP(total)
122x/100 + 92y/100 = 600 ---------(2)

by solving eq 1 and 2
x=160, y=440

so selling price of the article that he sold at a loss=

SP2= (92/100)*440 = 404.80

Answer is B
Because If price of one article is 'x' and other one is 'y'.Then
x+y=600..............equation 1
One article sells on profit of 22%
So x+.22x=1.22x
Other one sells on loss of 8%
So y-.08y=.92y
Now no profit no loss state that's why

1.22x+.92y=600............equation 2
From equation 1 and 2
x=160 and y=440

let x be the price of item sold in profit y be the price of item sold in loss

so x+y=600
and 122% of x + 92% of y =600
or 1.22x + 0.92y = 600

solving this we get 440

x/y=8/22=4/11-------(2)

By solving (1) and (2),we get y=440
