In 2000 students=(1000*120)/100=1200
In 2001 students=(1200*115)100=1380
In 2002 students=(1380*82)100=1131.6=1132 (decreased by 18%)

its easy...increasing 1000 by 20% gives 1200
increasing 1200 by 15% gives 1380
then decreasing 1380 by 18% gives 1132

In 2001 students=(1200*115)100=1380
In 2002 students=(1380*82)100=1131.6=1132 (decreased by 18%)

successive increase of 20% and 15% is given by:
20+15+(20*15)/100,i.e 38%
now,38% increase and 18% decrease corresponds to net increase/decrease is given by:
38+(-18)+{38*(-18)/100} i.e, 13.16%(positive means increase).
therefore,net strength in 2002 is given by increase of 13.16% to strength in 1999 i.e,1000 which is given by:
113.16% of 1000 which is equal to 1131.6!!!!!

take the first two increasing percent
apply formula a+b+((ab)/100) (a=20 and b=15)
therefore placing in the value of increase percent is 38%
therefore 38% of 1000 is 38. Therefore population after 2001 is 1380
Now population decrease by 18%, therefore 18% of 1380 is 248.4
so final population is (1380-248.4)=1131.6 or 1132
