73%=70%+65%-x
x=62%of total=292
total=470

Some data in the question is mismatched.For the answer to be 400, students passed in both the subject should be 248.

with the given data answer should be 470.96
% of students passed in either one or both the subject=100-27= 73
% of students passed in both the subject=(70+65)-73=62
So % of students passed only in Science=70-62=8 &
% of students passed only in social Studies=65-62=3
As 62%=292, So total number(100%) of students=100*292/62=14600/31=470.96

since 27% failed in both subjects so 73% must pass in both subjects.
and 292 students passed in both subjects
so,x*73%=292, where x is total no of students appeared in the exam.
so x*73/100=292
x=400

pass in either one or both subject= n(A)+n(B)-n(C), =70% of x( assume total student is x) =(70+65-27)/100=62*x/100,
therefore, 62*x/100=292, => x=470.96, => 471(approx)
ANS= 471

let x be the total no of students
By the ques it is given that only 292 students have passed in both the subjects.
so, (x-292) are the no of students that have failed in both the subjects.
therefore,(x-292)=27% of x
hence by solving x=400

suppose there is 100X students,292 passes in both subjects,then failed in both subjects=(100X-292)
100X-292=27x ie x=4 so total students =400
