To simplify, Let the work be 60 units(L.C.M of 20 and 12)
X can complete in one day=60/20=3units
Y can complete in one day=60/12=5Units
Both together can complete in one day=8units
Since X has completed 4 days of work, he must have completed 12 units of work
The remaining work that is 48 units of work has to be completed by both together
Thus, Both can complete the work in 48/8=6 days.

x 1 day work=1/20
y 1 day work=1/12
x 4days work=4/20=1/5
work left=1-1/5=4/5
now (x+y)1 day work=(1/12+1/20)=8/60
4/5 work done by them in=(4/5)*(60/8)=6 days
total days=6+4=10days..
