n by n by n cubes (n>1) :

Corner cubes:
8 little cubes are painted on 3 sides.

Edge cubes:
12(n - 2) little cubes are painted on 2 sides.

Face cubes:
6(n - 2)^2 little cubes are painted on 1 side.

"Inside" cubes:
(n - 2)^3 little cubes have no paint ; (4 - 2)^3 = 8
