let us suppose pipe 1 takes x minutes to fill the tank so in 1 minute it would fill 1/x part of tank.
then 2nd pipe will take x+5 minutes so in 1 minute it would fill 1/(x+5) part of tank.
both pipe will take 6 minutes to fill up the tank.
hence (1/x)+[1/(x+5)]=1/6
after solving we will get 10 and -3 as solution of x. x=(-3) can't be a solution.
thus 1st pipe will take 10 minutes
and 2nd pipe will take x+5 = 15 minutes.

Let volume of cistern be V litres

Pipe 1 rate of filling = V / x litres / min
Pipe 2 rate of filling = V / ( x + 5) litres / min

Combined rate of filling = V / 6 litres / min

V / x + V / ( x + 5 ) = V / 6

6 ( x + 5 ) V + (6 x ) V = x ( x + 5 ) V

6x + 30 + 6 x = x ² + 5 x

x ² - 7 x - 30 = 0

( x - 10 ) ( x + 3 ) = 0

x = 10

Pipes take 10 min and 15 min /(6)
1/x + 1/(x + 5) = 1/6
6(2x + 1) = 11x(x + 1)
60x + 30 = 11x^2 + 11x
11x^2 - 49x - 30 = 0
(x - 5)(11x + 6) = 0
One pipe takes 5 minutes and the other 6 minutes to fill the cistern.
