and other term be y . they differ by 40
so y = x+ 40

x/y = 2/ 7
x/x+40= 2/7
7x = 2x+ 80
5x = 80
x= 16
x= 16
y= 56
ratio = 16: 56.

Difference between x and y = 40 I.e.
y - x = 40 ............. (1)
x/y = 2/7
Cross multiply;
7x = 2y
7x / 2 = y ............... (2)
Substitute for y in (1);
y - x = 40
(7x/2) - x = 40
Take 2 as lcm;
[7x - 2x] / 2 = 40
5x/2 = 40
Cross multiply;
5x = 2 * 40 = 80
5x = 80
x = 80/5 = 16
x = 16.

7x/2 = y
7(16) / 2 = y
7(8) = y
y = 56.

The fraction is;
16/56

let the 1st number(small) is x and second number(big) is y
then we can write y-x=40...................(i)
and x/y=2/7......................(ii)
so, 2y=7x
Now multiply equation (i) by 2
so 2y-2x=80
now 7x-2x=80 (as 2y=7x)
so, 5x=80
x=16
as we know that y-x=40
so, y=x+40
=16+40
=56
so option 1)16:56 is the correct answer
