Sum of the ages of a boy and his father is 77 years. Before 22 years Father's age was 10 times the age of the boy. What was the age of father at the time of birth of the child?

Solution

Let the present age of father and son be x and y respectively
According to the given condition
x+y = 77 ---- (i)
before 22 years
(x-22) = 10(y-22)
Replacing value of x from equation (i)
so 77-y-22 = 10(y-22)
=> 55-y = 10y-220
=> 11y = 275
=> y = 25 and x = 52
so at the time of birth of child, age of father = 52-25 = 27 years

Father's age at that time is= 10x
(10x+22)+(x+22)=11x+ 44=77
